REDAC pays tribute to Professor Kwaku Ohene, a Ghanaian pediatric hematologist-oncologist and expert on sickle cell disease. A pioneer in the screening and treatment of sickle cell disease worldwide, he was the first to develop a public health program for newborn sickle cell screening in Africa.
He had planned to organize a joint symposium with REDAC in Accra in 2020 but this did not take place because of the Covid pandemic.
He remains for us a wise man, an older brother and a great scientist who knew how to combine competence and humility to serve patients suffering from sickle cell disease.
